Ben Davies of Wales has beaten Richard Jones of England 10-8 to win the EPT Liverpool Open.
Welshman Davies battled his way through a disappointing field of just 69 players in last weekends EPT Liverpool Open. Although the turnout was low the quality was very high. Imran Mjid, Mark Gray, Daryl Peach, Mick Hill, Neil Raybone and Darren Appleton all competed for the title and £1500 guaranteed 1st place prize money.
In addition players were represented from 11 nations with players from France, Austria and Spain joining the myriad of Brits.
A number of factors have caused the low turnout (in my opinion):
1. Another event in the north of England
2. Same £8000 purse, but the split is less top heavy so payment goes down to the last 32.
3. Higher entry fee of £90.00
I think the Harrow open at the end of March will be packed (I will also be making a return to competitive pool!)
The EPT has the potential to change pool in this country and offers real prize money, in real conditions with top class players. I think a move to Double elimination may also improve the field so that players can get at least two matches for their £90.
